DataTrack Fuel Systems Ltd working with The Bristol Port Company

Bristol Port has never been busier and DataTrack Fuel Systems have been playing an important part in the expansion of their plant and vehicle fuelling facilities.

With rising fuel prices, installing depot fuelling equipment is a significant decision. For Peter Taylor, engineering manager of The Bristol Port Company, choosing DataTrack fuel management systems has proved to be a solid commercial investment.

After thirteen years of reliable service he can look back with some satisfaction. All of the original equipment is still in daily service, providing fuel security at the pumps and then an analysis of all fuelling activities on a central PC.

Due to expansion, more controllers, pumps and tanks have been brought into service. They now have nine Electronic Padlocks Fuel controllers, across a site of over 2500 acres.
DataTrack remain at the forefront in innovation and the provision of fuelling technology, along with the highest standards of customer care. Fuel costs are simply too high, not to keep fuel safe and fully accountable.

Richard Stubbs, DataTrack’s Managing Director commented:
“We are delighted to have supplied this addition control and fuelling equipment to Bristol Port. Our working relationship has been second to none and the Port is getting the daily benefit of an automated fuel control and management system. We have also seen the spin off benefit of this activity with Bristol Port, in that over the last two years we have had several enquiries from the many supply and distribution companies serving the Port. This has resulted in a number of new installations including the Toyota and Autologic car distribution centres.”

With permission to extend the estate with a new £600m deep sea container port, bringing containers closer to their destination that any other super port, DataTrack Fuel Systems Ltd is looking forward to continuing its solid working relation with the Bristol Port Company, by providing secure, efficient and accountable dispensing of their fuel.

About The Bristol Port Company:

Bristol Port is Britain’s most centrally located deep sea port bringing ships closer to the centre of the UK. This means huge savings in cost and emissions as the inland distributor’s leg is significantly reduced.
Bristol is also the only major UK port with North, South, East and West motorway and rail connections giving high quality, uncongested connections.
Privatised in 1991, Bristol Port remains a privately owned independent business with the entire 2,600 acres of dock estate zoned for industrial use. With a further 1,000 acres adjacent to the Port zoned for development it is not surprising that almost all the major retailers have Regional Distribution Centres nearby. The estate has huge potential for development by businesses from biomass power stations to manufacturers and retailers.
Over £450m has been invested in Bristol since privatisation to create one of the world’s most productive and technically advanced ports providing employment for over 7,600 people.

Reduction of Carbon Emissions Project – DATATRACK FUEL SYSTEMS/ COMMERCIAL GROUP LTD

In 2007, Commercial Group Ltd based at Cheltenham, introduced a three year plan for a major reduction carbon emissions and fuel costs. 85% of the company’s CO2 production was accounted for by their fleet of vehicles, so these were naturally the first to receive attention. A project group was set up, led by Logistics Manager Rob Paddock, to carry out a fleet review and implement a plan for the introduction of new bio-diesel and fuel management technology. This has resulted in a dramatic reduction of CO2 emissions - over 50% by February 2009.

The use of bio diesel systems has played a large part in this. While many other companies have begun using biodiesel, based on fixed bio/diesel blends, usually B10 or B20 (10 or 20% bio), Commercial Ltd has chosen the new DATATRACK Bio Mixing Pump to optimize the bio mix for EACH VEHICLE. In addition, each pump has an integrated DATATRACK fuel management system to further enhance the efficiency of the dispensing and monitoring of fuel.
This pump will dispense any blend of bio/diesel depending on the individual requirements of the vehicle. By using two independent hydraulic systems, different fuels are pumped through each of these into an electronically controlled blender. Vehicles can then be fuelled with the most suitable mix, therefore maximising the potential carbon saving for each vehicle.

Integrated into the head of this pump is a Datatrack FuelSafe Fuel Controller, a fully automated system using fuel key and driver pin codes to dispense and blend bio diesel automatically. Data from the fuel controller is then sent to the Fuel Management software via a data cable, GSM or other method. The software provides Commercial Group Ltd with a choice of fuel reports featuring blend %, litres, mileage, cost and MPG for every vehicle in the fleet.
In addition, by demanding high audit ability, Commercial also ensured that the biodiesel is locally produced from known sources. The fuel is derived from UK sourced waste vegetable oil, containing no palm or soya grown on ex-rainforest, which means that the company has avoided the bad publicity that bio-fuels from unsustainable sources brings. This use of sustainable biodiesel has led to the company being a case study for Bio-NETT, an EU bio-fuels project promoting best practice.
Commercial has been highly proactive towards the benefits of reducing fleet emissions, especially through working with the Energy Saving Trust. As well as a case study for Business Link and appearances in the Observer and on BBC World, Commercial hosted a day at Cheltenham Racecourse, assisted by the EST, which was attended by over 200 delegates to discuss actions to reduce environmental emissions.
This new technology has received plenty of interest from Local Authorities and others looking to make a positive contribution to CO2 and cost reductions.
DATATRACK in conjunction with COMMERCIAL GROUP will be happy to arrange visits for potential customers, to show the system in action, and how it contributes to CO2 reductions and improved cost management.

FUELLING BY BARCODE

DATATRACK Fuel Systems have today installed their first barcode operated fuelling facility at the giant Toyota import centre in Bristol.

Toyota (GB) import around 150,000 new Toyota and Lexus vehicles each year. The majority of these come through Toyota’s Import Centre at Portbury Docks, near Bristol, where the preparation and distribution of the vehicles is carried out by Walon UK. Part of this process involves the fuelling of the vehicles to pre-specified levels, ready to be sent to dealerships across the UK.

DataTrack Fuel Systems Ltd has provided the technical solution to Toyota’s requirement for an automated fuelling process that utilises barcode technology. Each vehicle has its own stock card with a barcode containing the VIN, the trim specification and the type and amount of fuel required. Once this has been scanned by the operator, using the hand-held scanner, the fuel controller sends information to the petrol or diesel pump to dispense the amount required for the chosen vehicle. When fuelling has been completed, the data is sent to the office PC via the Toyota IT network. This data is then shown in a report including the vehicle ID, pump operator ID, type of fuel, and amount of fuel dispensed. These reports can be accessed at any time and give clear and accurate information to Toyota staff on thousands of car fuelling’s per month.

Richard Stubbs, Managing Director of DataTrack commented, “Fuel management is all about cost control and making the fuelling process easier. The Toyota bar code system is the latest example of DataTrack technology being used to achieve the fuelling solution our customers require.”

DataTrack are manufacturers of fuel management systems and also supply a wide range of fuel pumps, tank gauges and other fuelling equipment. This will often be as part of a new project or as an upgrade to an existing fuelling facility. The main purpose of fuel management is cost efficiencies, which can be achieved by installing a controller with PC software to show all fuelling activity in the form of on-screen and printable reports.

Operating throughout the UK and Ireland, DataTrack technology is being successfully applied to a diverse range of applications. In addition to the mainstream market of Road Transport and Local Authority fleets, these systems are also in use fuelling light aircraft, mobile cranes, helicopters, boats, and intercity trains.
